WWII Internment Camp art talk on March 26

Art of the Internment Camps: Culture Behind Barbed Wire

Saturday, March 26, 2016 (11:00AM – 12:00PM)

Joel D Valdez Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave. Tucson, AZ

“President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1942 WWII Executive Order 9066 forced the removal of nearly 125,000 Japanese American citizens from the west coast, incarcerating them in ten remote internment camps in seven western states. Government photographers Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, and Ansel Adams documented the internment, and artists Toyo Miyatake, Chiura Obata, Isamu Noguchi, Henry Sugimoto, and Miné Okubo made powerful records of camp life. Arizona’s two camps were among the largest, and this chronicle illuminates an important episode of state history, one grounded in national agendas driven by prejudice and fear.

Betsy Fahlman is Professor of Art History at Arizona State University. An authority on the art history of Arizona, her books include New Deal Art in Arizona (2009) and The Cowboy’s Dream: The Mythic Life and Art of Lon Megargee (2002). She is the author of two essays in catalogues published in 2012 by the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.”

This program is sponsored by  Arizona Humanities.  More info: library.pima.gov.

Ikebana at the Yume Japanese Gardens

Spring Ikebana Festival at Yume Japanese Gardens, March 13 to 18, 2016

Ikebana-Picture-IV

Ikebana – “living flowers” – is one of Japan’s most time-honored arts and uniquely emphasizes shape, line, and form by giving equal weight to the stems and leaves of a plant rather than merely arranging its blooms. Classical ikebana flower arranging dates to the 15th century and successor schools have emerged since. See floral exhibits by five schools throughout the Gardens March 13-18. Free with regular Gardens admission. More info:  www.yumegardens.org, 2130 N. Alvernon Way in Tucson.
