In addition to his signature show favorites, this special show will draw on a vibrant catalog of holiday classics such as We Three Kings, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, O Holy Night, I’ll Be Home For Christmas and selections from his “Jake & Friends” released in November 2021 (Willie Nelson, Bette Midler, Jack Johnson, Michael McDonald, Vince Gill & Amy Grant and more).

Editor’s note: Once I was ushering at The Palace Theater in Hilo, Hawaii for Jake’s concert. He walked in anonymously from the front lobby, came up to me and said “thanks for helping Auntie”, and kissed me on the cheek. Star power! And I had never met him before, but he called me “Auntie”, an endearing term for the elderly in Hawaii.

Center for Buddhist Studies has been hosting a lecture series at various locations on the University of Arizona campus, highlighting the “350th death anniversary of Zen Master Yinyuan Longqi (隱元隆琦1592-1673, Ingen Ryūki in Japanese). Special ceremonies and events will be held in both Japan and China to honor this great Zen master. In North America, the Center for Buddhist Studies, College of Humanities at the University of Arizona is organizing a series of commemorative events which will run for one year beginning May 3, 2022. These events will present and explore the extraordinary life of Zen Master Yinyuan and the great achievements of the Huangbo 黃檗 Chan tradition (known as the Ōbaku school of Zen Buddhism in Japan)  that Yinyuan pioneered in China and Japan. These events highlight the intersection between religion, art, and culture in China and Japan and will be presented in both online and offline formats. Activities will include an online exhibition of works of art related to the Ōbaku tradition, academic lectures, musical performances, and tea-related events. UPDATE: Both lectures cancelled, will be re-scheduled for next year.

Fall lecture series continues with two talks on November 15 and 16 at 4 p.m. Previous lectures were held on October 24 and 31, and the final lecture will be held on December 5, 2022.

The annual Tucson Japanese Festival (TJF) tentatively set for January 21, 2023 has been cancelled by the 13 member Southern Az Japanese Cultural Coalition Council. This decision was based on the ongoing covid pandemic, and also because of a conflict with Chinese New Year in January 2023.

This popular New Year event started up in January 2014 as a small mochi pounding event at Yume Japanese Gardens, but has grown to a large Japanese festival over the years (2015 to 2020). It was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 and 2022.

This TJF celebrating the New Year has been held the past two years at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, 1288 W. River Rd. The Tucson Chinese Association is planning on hosting a Lunar New Year Gala for the new Year of the Rabbit on January 21 likely at that location. For more Information go to tucsonchinese.org.
